4 Days Southcoast Winter

4 Days Southcoast Winter

Winter Road Trip: 4 Days in the Heart of Eternal Ice

There is a time of year when Iceland shows its quietest yet most spectacular face. When the light stays low and frost blankets the lava fields, we take four days to explore the South Coast. No rushing from spot to spot—just a shared immersion into the winter world, with me there to capture these magical moments for you.

Day 1 | Reykjavík to Vík: Glaciers & Delights

We start relaxed, driving straight into the sunrise. Our first stop is GK/Faxi Bakery—there’s no better start than the scent of fresh Icelandic cinnamon rolls and a hot coffee. Recharged, we visit Seljalandsfoss, which in winter light has its own mystical aura.

  • The Highlight: At noon, we put on our crampons. We’ll hike for three hours across the deep blue ice of Sólheimajökull. These are the photos that need no posing—just you and the primal power of the glacier.

  • Overnight: In the charming coastal village of Vík.

Day 2 | Vík to Vatnajökull: The Vast National Park

Today is all about the sense of space. We drive through snow-covered lava fields into Vatnajökull National Park. At the Skaftafell Visitor Centre, we’ll take in the surroundings before reaching the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon just in time for the soft afternoon light. The icebergs floating in the water are the perfect, serene backdrop for portraits reflecting peace and strength.

  • Overnight: Vatnajökull / Höfn area.

Day 3 | Blue Wonders & Diamonds

This is the day many have been waiting for. We hop into a Super Jeep and head deep into the magical ice caves of Vatnajökull. The crystal-clear blue of the caves in February is unlike anything else. Afterward, we’ll stroll along Diamond Beach, where ice blocks sparkle like real jewels on the black sand. On the way back to Vík, we’ll warm up with a coffee break.

  • My Tip: Keep your eyes peeled in Vík tonight—if the sky is clear, the Northern Lights often dance above us here.

Day 4 | Primal Forces & Volcanoes

Before heading back to Reykjavík, we visit the giants of the coast. At Reynisfjara, we feel the power of the Atlantic among the massive basalt columns (safety first, but the view is spectacular!). Passing the mighty Skógafoss, we head to the LAVA Centre in Hvolsvöllur to understand how this island was formed. We’ll enjoy our final snack together at the stylish food hall in Selfoss before a relaxed drive back to the capital.
